Essentials in a Web 2.0 Classroom. Guest Christopher Shively On the Trails to Teaching and Learning
speaking about 20 things a student must be able to do and/or speak to topic.

Intro: (1min) [Durff talks] Welcome to It's Elementary Show Four Essentials in a Web 2.0 Classroom with guest Christopher Shively. We are streaming live on the EdTechTalk Channel of the Worldbridges network. This is Lisa Durff, a K12 teacher in Maryland, AND Jose Rodriguez, third grade teacher in Los Angeles CA, AND Alice Mercer, a Elementary computer lab teacher in Sacramento, CA, AND Maria Knee a Kindergarten teacher from Deerfield, NH

Allow guest to introduce himself and tell us about his work.

1. Definitions/Setting the stage:

What is Web 2.0, Education Technology? Lisa will ask and Alice leads presentation.

Add this: “NCLB (No Child Left Behind) places two key ideas at the center of school reform: performance and scientific evidence.”

The problem with this is that projects like this: Emphasize incentives for outputs (student achievement) rather than the inputs that we know matter, such as raising teacher educational expectations, helping students spend more time on task, engaging students in challenging material, providing students with frequent and positive feedback, and helping students learn to be strategic in reaching their goals.

Allow for discussion and feedback from team.

2. Reasons to use technology in elementary

What is theory and reality behind it?
Jose: Getting our students prepared to participate in a Read-Write Web. Learning skills that will facilitate the learning.

Discussion of NETS Technology Standards for students. Do an overview of standards and student profiles.

3. Examples from our classes

What does it look like?
Jose: Presenting and exploring content beyond the textbook. Use of Google and Wikipedia and other webportals. Maintaining a classroom blog, looking for publishing opportunities (to blog, digital stories, podcasts, video) and Connecting with other classrooms on the web.

4. Guest Christopher Shively

Thoughts by our guest. Recent Blog entry titled: Trail Guides for Trail 1 -6

5. Opportunities and Challenges

What opportunities are there, what challenges do we face?
Jose: How do convince the teacher that is concerned about basics such as having access to basic hardware? How about districts that block some of the "social networking" sites? Just to be a devils advocate :-) What are the challenges we face in our own schools and Districts. Remember the COW, that hasn't been milked?
